In June, East Carolina University initiated SilTanium Supreme-V testing in Legacy Hall.

The halls received the full process of floor finish removal and the application of one coat of DieHard high-solids floor finish and burnish. Then, we applied two coats of SilTanium Supreme-V and burnish before repeating the process with two final coats of SilTanium Supreme-V and a final burnish. This process produces maximum shine and coating depth.

Resident rooms were simply stripped and four coats of SilTanium Supreme-V were applied and not burnished.

The plan is for maximum protection in the rooms and maximum protection and aesthetics in the halls.  Both outcomes have been well received and another test is under way at a major university campus.

The second- and third-floor halls of Georgia Tech’s Parker H. Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience building received the SilTanium Supreme-V treatment on a floor finish that was scrubbed, BUT NOT stripped. We tested this system to further improve the productivity of the application of SilTanium Supreme-V over well-maintained VCT with existing floor finish.

Since halls can be a tough environment, floor-maintenance costs in these areas can affect the productivity of floor-care staff. With SilTanium Supreme-V, Georgia Tech now has the depth of shine common in acrylic floor finish, the extended wear performance of SilTanium Supreme-V, and has reduced transition time and cost for the system’s installation. 

Floors can be beautiful and durable with SilTanium Supreme-V.  And now the transition to this high-performance system also can be quick and inexpensive when used over floors that have been well-maintained.

When Georgia Tech expanded use of SilTanium Supreme-V to its Ford Environmental Science and Technology building, we applied four coats of Supreme-V to freshly stripped VCT on a lower-level floor. This floor gets a lot of abuse, as the main loading dock serves several buildings through a network of inter-building tunnels. Durability is a requirement in this environment and SilTanium Supreme-V will meet the challenge.

After the excellent, in-house, Georgia Tech floor-care professionals removed the existing floor finish, SilTanium Corporation trained staff to properly install SilTanium Supreme-V.  The trainees were surprised at how easily SilTanium Supreme-V goes down. The fast-dry benefits allowed them to start the next coat immediately after completing approximately 1,200 square feet. Most importantly, SilTanium Supreme-V is so thin that any contaminate, such as hair, does not become imbedded into the body of the coating, but comes right off after burnishing.

Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn. has begun initial testing of SilTanium Supreme-V in a high-traffic hall beside the ICU. Sodexo, which manages the hospital’s environmental services, did an excellent job of removing all existing floor finish. After that process was complete, SilTanium installed and burnished one coat of DieHard high-solids floor finish.  Then we applied four coats of Supreme-V, with burnishing after coats two and four. The result is a depth and shine of the coating that makes it almost impossible to tell where SilTanium Supreme starts and the floor finish ends.  In the photo below, see if you can locate the transition point. 

This test leaves no doubt that SilTanium Supreme-V can give floor finish a great shine.  But, the product’s true benefit is the long-lasting, low-maintenance advantages it affords. Auburn University has switched to SilTanium Supreme-V in Parker Hall. The intent is to reduce the care cycle on asbestos tile, thereby reducing the risk of asbestos exposure.  The Parker building is slated for demolition in two years, so there will be no need to strip the floors before then.

The process started using Pacific Floor Care’s walk-behind orbital scrubber with Battery Shield^®.  Using only water and maroon pads, we removed the finish and reduced the top layer of sealer.  We then applied a coat of DieHard high-solids floor finish and, once that was dry, we burnished the DieHard. Finally, we applied and burnished four coats of SilTanium Supreme-V, two coats at a time. This system provides maximum shine and depth of coating while offering all the long-term wear protection of SilTanium Supreme-V.

Additional halls in the Parker building will receive the same treatment in the near future.

After a full year of on-site testing, SilTanium Supreme-V is beginning its Georgia Tech rollout on buildings with VCT tile. Tested in a high-traffic environment containing tables, chairs, food and beverage, SilTanium Supreme-V still performs as if just installed.

Auto scrubbing has decreased from three times a week to once a month, and burnishing has reduced from three times a week to once every five or six weeks. Best of all, the floor has not needed recoats, eliminating top scrub, recoat, and strip and finish for the entire year. With costs down and aesthetics up, SilTanium Corporation will begin training Georgia Tech’s in-house custodial staff to install SilTanium Supreme-V directly.

Sonoraville High School’s busiest corridor handles traffic from bus pick-up and loading. This busy area is now the subject of a year-long test of SilTanium Supreme-V.

After stripping the finish from approximately 1,000 square feet of VCT, SilTanium Corporation then applied one coat of DieHard floor finish and four coats of SilTanium Supreme-V. The floor finish undercoat bolstering the depth of shine accomplished the mission.

The original white color of the VCT now is clearly apparent, and it took less time to install all four coats of SilTanium Supreme-V than to install one coat of floor finish and allow it to dry. The effective coverage rate of SilTanium Supreme-V was 12,000 feet per coat!  This means the entire trial used just over one quart of SilTanium Supreme-V.

When University of North Carolina at Charlotte began testing SilTanium Supreme-V, it took on the challenge of an art-studio classroom. Durable, low-maintenance floor protection was necessary, and SilTanium Supreme-V rose to the challenge. 

XSForce, SilTanium’s industrial-strength floor-finish remover was used to strip existing floor finish. With a 30:1 dilution, nothing is more concentrated or faster-working than XSForce. After cleaning and drying, four thin coats of SilTanium Supreme-V were applied. Within 25 minutes, floors were burnished to a beautiful shine and ready for students to use.

Spelman College initiated SilTanium Supreme-V testing in January. Now, deeming the testing successful and the costs savings apparent, Spelman is moving forward with full-building application of Supreme-V.   

The halls and living quarters in an on-campus dorm now will be protected by SilTanium Supreme-V. The university will save time and money and can now allocate staff to other projects. The continued improvement of facilities helps to create an exceptional living environment for students.
